The main aspect I want to improve on as a member of the ensemble is being able to integrate myself into the band musically. As an upper woodwind, I tend to go sharp and hear myself above other voices when I should be blending into the texture. I wish to improve listening skills in order to realize when I am sharp or when I am flat and adjust accordingly. Furthermore, this would also help my intonation and tuning abilities as I would acquire the skill to adjust quicker to those around me. Another aspect I wish to improve on is breathing with the band and moving with the songs. Though I often forget, when I physically move to the songs I play, I find myself using more dynamic contrast and playing with more "color," for lack of a better word. The music comes to life and is no longer a monotonous blend of various instruments. Breathing with the band is also essential because as a member, my sound individually is insignificant. Rather, it is the sound resulting from the whole ensemble that leaves an impression. Through learning the way other members play and breathe, I can not only expand my knowledge of different interpretations of music but also learn to accommodate my surroundings.
Something I hope the whole ensemble is able to improve on is listening and paying attention to directions in class. I find it quite sad how the class can spend half the class getting reading and warning up. This takes away so much time from playing the music, which in my opinion, is the most fun.
